Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty

Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty

Back pain is a frustrating and often debilitating condition to experience. The cause of back pain can depend on the circumstances of the patient, but one very common reason for back pain is due to general wear and tear in the spinal cord. Pressure on the spinal cord can also cause degenerative changes such as arthritis and fractures that commonly lead to severe pain.

Procedures like posterior cervical laminoplasty are designed to help relieve pressure on the spinal cord, thus resulting in greater comfort and less chance of developing a spine-related condition in the future. If you’d like to learn more about the posterior cervical laminoplasty procedure here at Subach Spinal Solutions, contact us today and schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Subach.

What is Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty?

Posterior cervical laminoplasty involves relieving pressure on the spinal cord by using an incision toward the back. The term for spinal cord pressure is spinal stenosis and it can occur at different levels of the spine and often at simultaneous times. Laminoplasty can be one of the most reliable ways to help relieve the pressure in order to allow your spinal cord to heal from any adverse symptoms that you have been facing, many of which could be the cause of your back pain.

How Does Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty Work?

Patients will first undergo a series of tests to ensure that their circumstances are a fit for the posterior cervical laminoplasty procedure. During the procedure itself, patients will lie face-down on the operating table and an incision will be made at the back of the neck. Monitoring devices will be used to examine the spinal cord to ensure that there is no damage to it during surgery. Incisions are then made in the bone of the spinal cord (known as the lamina) in order to relieve pressure off the spine. This allows the spinal fluid to move around the spinal cord in a normal fashion and also helps the spinal cord move naturally. Patients will need to stay in the hospital for several days to monitor the beginning of your recovery.
